How to define a custom .vmoptions file for JetBrains Client

Can a VM option be defined for the remote development client before it starts? Can a VM option be defined for a remote development client regardless of the IDE and version it connects to?

Answer

It's possible to define a custom .vmoptions file, which works globally and redefines the default VM options for all client versions.

Set the JETBRAINS_CLIENT_VM_OPTIONS environment variable in your OS, which points to a custom .vmoptions file location.

Note: Doesn't work for remote development connections set in Toolbox.
