Problem
When attempting to run a remote IDE through the JetBrains Gateway or Toolbox on an RHEL 8 server configured with FIPS enforcement, the IDE fails to start with OpenSSL internal error, assertion failed: FATAL FIPS SELFTEST FAILURE error.
Cause
The failure is caused by the FIPS enforcement mechanism. Certain bundled libraries used by the IDE are not fully compatible with FIPS-mode requirements.
Resolution 1
Please use the backend IDE version 2025.1 and above.
Resolution 2
If an older version is used, set the following environment variable on your remote server (for ex., in ~/.bashrc for bash).
export REMOTE_DEV_SERVER_USE_SELF_CONTAINED_LIBS=0
After configuring this environment variable, reestablish the remote development session again.
