Problem
When loading a large solution in JetBrains Rider that includes both older .NET Framework 4.7/4.8 projects and .NET 8, the IDE crashes and prompts for a restart. This behavior occurs even when simply waiting for the solution to load without performing any actions.
Cause
The issue is caused by the RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSSHooks64.dll), which is known to inject itself into Rider processes. RTSS, commonly shipped with MSI Afterburner and other GPU/overclocking tools, hooks Direct3D APIs in all system processes to draw overlays. This conflicts with the .NET Runtime (CLR) inside the Rider.Backend.exe process, corrupting its state and causing the crash (CLR fatal error 0x80131506). The problem becomes more probable with larger solutions due to increased JIT activity.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, perform the following steps:
- Open RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS).
- Click Add and select Rider.Backend.exe. The full path is typically:
C:\Program Files\JetBrains\Rider\r2r\2026.1.2R\63094FB909F7822526E92116E786ED7\windows-x64\Rider.Backend.exe(check your logs for specifics). - With that profile selected, set Application Detection Level to None.
- Save the changes and restart Rider, then try loading the problematic solution again.
As an alternative, if RTSS is not recognized, it might have been installed alongside MSI Afterburner. Exiting RTSS via its tray icon or disabling auto-start for RTSS and other in-game overlays (e.g., Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA overlays) can also help test if the crash stops. If the issue is resolved by disabling RTSS, consider keeping it disabled or applying the permanent exclusion for Rider.Backend.exe as described above.
