Problem
When using AI plugins like JetBrains AI Assistant and Junie in IDE managed by Toolbox App through IDE Services, these plugins get uninstalled upon logging out of IDE Services and restarting the IDE.
Cause
This occurs because the IDE is managed by the organization's IDE Services configuration when logged in. Plugins like AI Assistant and Junie are installed and controlled as part of that managed configuration. When the user logs out of IDE Services, the managed configuration is removed, and with it, any plugins governed by the organization are uninstalled as well. This behavior is by design.
Resolution
To address this issue and maintain access to AI plugins after logging out of IDE Services, the following resolutions are recommended:
-
Using a Managed IDE without AI Enterprise: Disable AI Enterprise in the relevant IDE Services profile. Users can manually reinstall AI Assistant and Junie again and configure their usage under a JetBrains AI Pro/Ultimate license. Once installed outside the managed configuration, the plugins will not be affected if the user logs out of IDE Services.
-
Using an Unmanaged IDE: Install the IDE without logging into IDE Services or log out to transition into an unmanaged state. Then, install AI Assistant and Junie manually under a personal JetBrains AI Pro/Ultimate license. This step severs the link between the plugins and the organizational IDE Services configuration.
Improvements in documentation and user interface messaging are planned to provide clearer information on how plugins are controlled under various configurations.
