Overview
If you sign in to JetBrains Toolbox App using your company’s IDE Services / License Vault organization account and the SSH / Remote Development option (and previously opened JetBrains Gateway projects) disappear from the Toolbox Projects list, this typically means that Remote Development via Toolbox is disabled for your organization.
Applies to
- JetBrains Toolbox App 3.x+
- JetBrains Gateway / Remote Development (SSH)
- JetBrains IDE Services (Cloud or self-hosted)
What you’ll see (symptoms)
- Toolbox shows only Local (no SSH) in the environment selector.
- Previously opened Gateway / SSH projects are no longer shown as project shortcuts in Toolbox.
- If you sign out of the organization account, SSH and the project shortcuts may reappear.
Why this happens
When Toolbox is connected to an IDE Services organization, some Toolbox features (including Remote Development integrations) are controlled by your organization’s IDE Services configuration.
This is not related to evaluation/trial status. If you have a valid IDE license (including an active evaluation), Remote Development is allowed from a licensing perspective.
Important note
Please note that Remote Development provisioning is supported only for users who connect to their IDE through the JetBrains Toolbox App. Users connected via JetBrains Gateway will not have Remote Development available.
Solution
1) Make sure you’re up to date (client-side)
- Update to the latest JetBrains Toolbox App.
- Quit Toolbox completely and start it again.
If SSH is still missing, continue below.
2) Have your IDE Services administrator enable Toolbox Remote Development (organization-side)
Ask your organization’s IDE Services administrator to enable Gateway/Remote Development integration in Toolbox for your IDE Services organization.
IDE Services Cloud (hosted by JetBrains)
Your organization cannot edit server configuration directly.
Please contact JetBrains Support and ask to enable Toolbox Gateway integration/Remote Development in Toolbox for your tenant. Include:
- Your IDE Services Cloud URL (tenant)
- Toolbox App version
- A brief description (for example: “SSH disappears in Toolbox when signed into the org”)
self-hosted (on‑prem) IDE Services
Your administrator should enable the feature flags in the IDE Services configuration, then restart/redeploy IDE Services.
Depending on deployment, this is usually done in either:
-
application.yaml(binaries or Docker), or -
values.yaml(Helm/Kubernetes)
A typical configuration looks like this:
tbe:
features:
enable-gateway-integration: on # enables Toolbox Remote Development built-in functionality (SSH bundled plugin)
toolbox:
enable-toolbox-plugins: true # enables Toolbox Remote Development plugins such as Coder, Ona etc.
After applying the change, restart/redeploy the IDE Services instance.
3) Restart Toolbox to pick up the updated organization settings
After the organization-side change is applied, affected users should:
- Quit Toolbox App completely.
- Start Toolbox again.
- Sign in to the organization (if prompted).
