Background
Until 2025, PyCharm was distributed as two separate products: the free, open-source PyCharm Community Edition and the paid PyCharm Professional Edition. Starting with the 2025.1 release, both editions were merged into a single product, unified PyCharm. PyCharm Community 2025.2 is the final standalone Community Edition release; from 2025.3 onward, all Community Edition users transition to the unified PyCharm.
Question
Where can PyCharm Community Edition be downloaded, and why does it no longer receive updates?
Answer
PyCharm Community Edition is discontinued. Download the unified PyCharm instead.
- The core functionality of the unified PyCharm, including Jupyter Notebook support, is free.
- Advanced features that were previously exclusive to PyCharm Professional, such as remote notebooks, dynamic tables, and SQL cells, require a Pro subscription. Every major PyCharm release includes a free one-month Pro trial; after the trial ends, PyCharm keeps working with the free core features.
- Updating PyCharm Community 2025.2 to version 2025.3 or later migrates the current setup and preferences to the unified PyCharm.
- Existing PyCharm Professional licenses continue to work in the unified PyCharm without changes.
- The open-source code is still available in the intellij-community repository on GitHub, and building PyCharm from source is still possible.
