How to add back/forward and other missing buttons to IntelliJ IDE main toolbar

After updating to 2024.2, many buttons from the main toolbar are missing. How can I get them back?

Answer

Starting with 2024.2, the New UI is enabled by default. One of its main principles is a clutter-free toolbar. In the Classic UI, most buttons were shown by default and users could remove the ones they didn’t need. In the New UI, only essential buttons are shown, but you can easily add your most-used actions.

To Add Back/Forward and Other Buttons

1. Right-click an empty space on the main toolbar.
2. Select Add to Main Toolbar → Back / Forward (or another available action).

To Add Other Actions

If the action you want is not in the quick list:

1. Right-click the toolbar and choose Customize Main Toolbar.
2. Search for the desired action and add it to the toolbar.
