Question
How will the perpetual fallback license work with the new unified IntelliJ IDEA distribution?
Answer
Starting with IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2, the licensing experience for Ultimate users is being improved. If your subscription expires, you will no longer be locked out of the IDE. Instead, you'll retain access to the same version, but with the free feature set (formerly known as the Community Edition).
This means your work won’t be interrupted. Even if your license lapses while you're on vacation or between renewals. You'll still be able to open projects, write code, and stay productive without switching to another version.
Your perpetual fallback license will continue to function as before, granting access to the last major version available at the start of your most recent uninterrupted subscription year. With the unified distribution, this allows you to either:
- Activate older versions that match your fallback license, or
- Use the latest version with access to the currently available free features.
This update applies only to IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate users and is designed to ensure a smoother experience during license transitions.
