Problem
Auto-configure option for connecting JetBrains IDEs to Claude Desktop via MCP Server may fails to create or update the configuration file. Symptoms include:
- Auto-configure button appears to do nothing — no UI feedback or confirmation message
- Configuration file is not created at the expected location (
~/.claude/claude_desktop_config.jsonon macOS/Linux,%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.jsonon Windows) - IDE does not appear as an available MCP server in Claude Desktop after running auto-configure
Cause
- IDE lacks file system permissions to write to the user home directory or
APPDATAfolder - File system or antivirus restrictions block configuration file creation
- IDE or Claude Desktop version incompatibility
Resolution
Attempt Auto-Configure
- In IDE, navigate to "Settings | Tools | MCP Server"
- Click "Auto-configure"
- Wait for confirmation message in the IDE status bar or notification area
If the file does not exist after auto-configure completes, proceed to the next section.
If Auto-Configure Failed — Troubleshoot Permissions
-
On Windows: Run IDE as administrator
-
On macOS: Grant IDE full disk access
- System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access
- Add the IDE to the list
- Restart IDE and retry auto-configure
-
On Linux: Verify directory permissions
- Confirm
~/.claude/directory exists and is writable:ls -ld ~/.claude/ - If it doesn't exist, create it:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/ - Retry auto-configure
- Confirm
Manual Configuration (Workaround)
If auto-configure continues to fail, manually create the configuration file:
- Create or open the configuration file at the path above
- Add the following content (replace
/path/to/idewith your IDE installation directory):
{
"mcpServers": {
"jetbrains": {
"command": "/path/to/ide/bin/mcp-server",
"args": []
}
}
}
On Windows, use forward slashes or escape backslashes:
{
"mcpServers": {
"jetbrains": {
"command": "C:/Program Files/JetBrains/IntelliJ IDEA/bin/mcp-server.exe",
"args": []
}
}
}
- Save the file
- Restart Claude Desktop
- Verify the IDE appears as an available MCP server in Claude
Verify the Connection
- Open Claude Desktop
- Confirm the IDE is listed as an available MCP server
- Open the IDE and verify Claude context menus or features appear
- Check IDE logs (Help → Show Log in Explorer/Finder) for any connection errors
