Recent projects fails to list on Welcome Screen. Entries appear on mouse hover

Problem

The welcome screen in JetBrains Rider does not render recent projects correctly. When hovering over the rows, the entries become visible, but the rendering behavior is inconsistent and glitchy.

Cause

Probably the issue is caused by a wrong encoding used by Rider. Verify the idea.log file (Help | Diagnostic Tools | Show Logs in {explorer/finder/files}):

1. Open the idea.log file.
2. Search (using Ctrl+F) for the entry: AppStarter - locale.
3. Verify if the following parameters are set to UTF-8:
   • JNU=UTF-8
   • file.encoding=UTF-8

Resolution

If either JNU nor file.encoding is not UTF-8, try the following:

1. Close Rider;

2. Open terminal;

3. Invoke export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 ;

4. Launch Rider from this terminal session: rider # or {riderInstallationPath}/bin/rider.sh ;

   If the issue fixes after that, consider adding export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 to ~/.bash_profile .
