How to stop Rider from generating applicationhost.config file

How can Rider be configured to prevent overwriting an existing applicationhost.config file, or how can this behavior be disabled globally?

Answer

By default, Rider generates a new applicationhost.config file, overwriting any existing configuration.

To disable this behavior, follow the steps below:

1. Disable applicationhost.config generation in project settings:

   • Open a context menu of the project name in the Solution Explorer: right-click or press Shift+F10
   • Select Properties
   • Navigate to the Web section
   • Uncheck Generate applicationhost.config checkbox.

2. Replace the default applicationhost.config with a custom applicationhost.config file in the required location.

   If there is no applicationhost.config, Rider still generates a default config file. There is a feature request to prevent this behaviour: applicationhost.config is generated when it should not applicationhost.config is generated when it should not.
