Question How can file templates be shared with coworkers and saved to a version control system (VCS) like Git? Attempts to save templates from File | File Templates | C# as team-shared do not appear to save them in a visible location. Even when saved to a project or the local computer, the saved templates cannot be located. What steps should be taken?
Answer
Layer-based settings, including file templates, are saved in .DotSettings files. When a file template is saved as a team-shared setting, it is stored in a file named <SolutionName>.sln.DotSettings in the solution directory.
To share these settings with a team:
- Open the solution directory containing the
<SolutionName>.sln.DotSettingsfile. - Add the file to the version control system (VCS), such as Git.
For additional details, refer to the JetBrains Rider documentation on layer-based settings.
