Problem
JetBrains Rider application fails to launch on a Windows 11 AVD environment. The issue occurs when attempting to access Rider through the Start Menu, running it directly from its installation folder, or executing rider.bat. Additionally, launching the application and attempting to log in causes the AVD to become unresponsive or disconnect.
Cause
The root cause was identified as the OpenText UFT One application, which was automatically setting the JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS environment variable globally on the AVD. This conflicted with JetBrains Rider's Java VM options and prevented the IDE from functioning as expected.
Resolution
-
Identify and clear the problematic environment variables (
JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONSand_JAVA_OPTIONS) causing conflicts:-
Open a Command Prompt.
-
Run the following command to unset the variable for the current session:
set JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS= -
Verify the variable is cleared using:
echo %JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS%
-
-
Launch Rider from the same Command Prompt where the variable is unset by executing:
C:\Users\<USER ID>\AppData\Local\Programs\Rider\bin\rider64.exe -
Test and confirm Rider launches successfully. If other applications require the conflicting variables, consider these options:
- Create a batch file to set the variables for specific applications only and launch them from the batch file.
- Use user-level environment variable overrides to prevent global conflicts.
-
Check system properties and consult IT/administrators to investigate why the environment variable is being recreated. OpenText UFT One application was setting the
JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONSvariable. Uninstalling the OpenText UFT One application resolved the issue entirely. -
If necessary, reinstall JetBrains Rider using the JetBrains Toolbox, ensuring the latest version is installed.
-
Verify issue resolution. Uninstalling OpenText UFT One permanently might resolve the problem, allowing JetBrains Rider to launch without further conflicts.
