Question:
The backend process (Rider.Backend{.exe}) is slow or consumes a lot of CPU. How to profile Rider backend to investigate performance issue?
Answer:
- Get ready to reproduce the issue;
- Select "Help | Diagnostic tools | Profile Backend with Sampling" (or Profile Backend with Timeline if requested explicitly);
- Wait for the "Profiling Rider.Backend in progress. Stop it manually" message to appear in the bottom status bar. It indicates that Profiling is in progress):
- Perform actions which are causing performance problems, try to reproduce the performance problem several times while the snapshot is being recorded;
- Then stop profiling with the action "Help | Diagnostic tools | Backend: stop profiling", or click the Cross button in the status bar;
- In the bottom right corner you will see a notification popup that a snapshot has been captured and a link to the snapshot file. Collect this snapshot. It can also be accesses from the Notifications tool window
- Upload the generated dump to our Uploads service and share the Upload ID in the relevant YouTrack issue or support ticket.
- In case you haven't yet contacted Rider support, submit the issue directly to our bug tracker. In the issue, provide a short description of the performance problems you're experiencing, share the Upload ID received on the upload page. Additionally, attach Rider logs (see How to collect Rider logs)
