Background/Situation [Optional]
When using macOS with Apple Silicon processors, Homebrew installs to /opt/homebrew/ instead of the legacy Intel location /usr/local/. For .NET projects using P/Invoke to load native libraries (e.g., libusb-1.0), the runtime’s dlopen does not search /opt/homebrew/lib by default, resulting in DllNotFoundException at runtime. To resolve this, setting DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/homebrew/lib in the environment is required. However, this is hindered by macOS System Integrity Protection (SIP), which strips DYLD_* variables from environment inheritance for notarized or hardened processes like Rider.
Additionally, Rider only allows environment variables to be defined at the project-specific level via Run/Debug Configuration or templates for specific solutions, increasing the configuration effort for users managing multiple solutions or projects.
Question
Is there a way to set global environment variables for Run/Debug configurations in Rider to reduce redundant configurations for every solution?
Answer
There are several workarounds to achieve similar results:
-
Use Run Configuration Templates:
- Navigate to
File → New Project Setup → Run Configuration Templates. - Add your desired environment variable (e.g.,
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/homebrew/lib) in the relevant templates for new projects. - This ensures that any new configurations inherit these global settings for similar project types.
- Navigate to
-
Utilize
launchSettings.json:- Add the required environment variables in the
launchSettings.jsonfile within each project. This approach directly applies settings per project-level without manually reconfiguring in the Rider UI.
- Add the required environment variables in the
-
Override Native Library Settings:
- Use the
NativeLibrary.SetDllImportResolvermethod in your code to set a custom resolver for where.NETloads native libraries during runtime. - This helps bypass the requirements for setting
DYLD_LIBRARY_PATHglobally.
- Use the
