Rider hangs when debugging unit tests

Problem

Rider hangs when debugging unit tests. The process for debugging starts but exits before any CLR is loaded into the process.

Cause

This issue can occur if the .NET configuration in Rider does not align with the SDK version required by the project.

Resolution

  1. Navigate to Settings | Build, Execution, Deployment | Toolset and Build.

  2. Ensure the .NET CLI and MSBuild version match the version of the SDK installed on your system.
