Problem
On Linux, when executing any Entity Framework (EF) commands via the Rider IDE interface, a "command or file not found" error appears. However, running the same commands directly from the terminal executes successfully.
Cause
The /home/<UserName>/.dotnet/tools/ directory, where the dotnet-ef tool is installed, is not included in the environment PATH variable that Riders uses. Rider does not read environment variables from interactive shell configuration files (like, ~/.bashrc)
Resolution
Update System PATH Configuration
Add /home/<UserName>/.dotnet/tools/ to the system-wide PATH environment variable by creating a script in /etc/profile.d/:
-
Create the file
/etc/profile.d/dotnet-path.sh:sudo nano /etc/profile.d/dotnet-path.sh -
Add the following line to the file:
export PATH="$PATH:/home/<UserName>/.dotnet/tools/" -
Save and close the file.
-
Make the script executable:
sudo chmod +x /etc/profile.d/dotnet-path.sh -
Log out and log back in, or reload the shell configuration.
After completing these configurations, the Rider IDE will properly recognize and support EF commands.
