Background/Situation
Debugging complex applications that utilize mixed environments, such as Unity projects with native C++ plugins, often requires understanding the managed and native stack traces.
Question
How can one view the managed C# (mono) call stack in JetBrains tools (e.g., Rider) when a breakpoint is hit in native C++ code within a Unity project?
Answer
Rider allows observing the managed C# call stack at the moment a breakpoint triggers in native C++ code, it shows a complete call stack including managed and native: As of 2025.1.4 it only works in projects running Mono. (Unity to C++ / Other Mono-running app to C++)
- Launch the Unity application with debugging enabled.
- Use Rider for debugging, ensuring integration with Unity is correctly configured.
- When the breakpoint in the C++ code is hit, Rider shows the call stack in the Debugger tool window. Both managed and native stack traces are shown.
