Background/Situation
The account for a session belongs to the agent, not to the IDE. The Agent login control sits under the task input of a session, next to the model and permission selectors. It shows the current account and opens the list of accounts.
Question
Can an existing Claude or ChatGPT subscription drive the agents in the Air plugin, instead of an API key?
Answer
| Agent | Account that works |
|---|---|
| Codex | A ChatGPT subscription (Plus, Pro, or Team). Codex keeps its own login, and the plugin reports it as "Managed by Codex". |
| Claude Agent | An Anthropic API key. A Claude Pro, Max, or Team subscription does not work. Feature Request to support Claude subscription: Air IDE plugin: Support Claude subscription (OAuth) login for Claude Agent |
| JetBrains AI | A JetBrains Account with an active JetBrains AI subscription. |
To see which account a session uses, open the Agent login menu. The current account is the first entry, for example "Managed by Codex" or "JetBrains AI". The same menu has an Accounts item that connects or switches an account.
Checked with the publicly available plugin in 2026.2. Its settings expose an API key field for Claude and no subscription sign-in.
Anthropic does not permit a third-party application to sign in with a claude.ai account. The restriction also covers subscription rate limits, and it applies to agents built on the Claude Agent SDK. The standalone JetBrains Air app follows the same rule. Its Claude Agent connects an Anthropic Console account with API billing. Its OpenAI Codex agent accepts a ChatGPT account (Plus, Pro, or Team).
