Problem
In PyCharm 2025.1 and later without a Pro subscription, an external Jupyter server cannot be added:
- Settings | Jupyter | Jupyter Servers lists only the managed server and has no Add button.
- Tools | Add Jupyter Connection... is missing from the main menu.
- New | Jupyter Connection is missing from the context menu of the Project tool window.
- External servers configured earlier, during a Pro subscription or trial, do not appear in the list. They are hidden, not deleted.
Cause
Connection to an external Jupyter server is a Pro feature. This includes Jupyter Notebook and JupyterLab servers, JupyterHub, and AWS SageMaker. The Configuring Jupyter notebook page marks the "Set up an External Server" section as "Available only in PyCharm Pro".
Without a subscription, PyCharm runs notebooks on the managed Jupyter server. PyCharm starts this server locally with the project interpreter, and it needs no setup.
Resolution
To connect to an external Jupyter server:
- Activate a Pro subscription, or start the free Pro trial if it was not used for the current major version.
- Add the server as described in the "Add External Jupyter server" and "Set up an External Server" sections of Configuring Jupyter notebook.
