Problem
The user uninstalled PyCharm due to two main issues:
- PyCharm changed the working files' location to the desktop, and attempts to reset this were unsuccessful.
- Code that previously worked ceased to function after a PyCharm update.
Cause
- File location issue: When creating a new project, the "Location" field in the New Project dialog is set by default to a directory, and it requires user adjustment if the default isn't suitable.
- Code execution issue: Following a major update, the project's Python interpreter may require re-selection or reconfiguration to match the user's environment.
Resolution
To resolve these issues:
Fixing the Python Interpreter Issue
- Open the project in PyCharm.
- Press
Ctrl + Alt + Sto access Settings. - Navigate to Project: | Python Interpreter.
- Verify if an interpreter is listed. If none is selected or if the listed one is invalid:
- Choose your Python interpreter from the existing list, or
- Click Add Interpreter and locate your Python installation.
For comprehensive guidance, you can follow the steps in the documentation: Configure a Python interpreter.
Resolving the File Location Issue
- PyCharm doesn't automatically move files to the desktop. Ensure your saved files are still in their respective original directories.
- When creating a new project, note the "Location" field at the top of the New Project dialog. This is where the project folder is saved by default. Change it to an explicit folder, such as "PythonProjects," or another directory of your choice, which will become the base location for that project.
Further Assistance
If these adjustments do not solve the problem, or if you believe these behaviors represent bugs, consider providing additional diagnostic data:
- Go to Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data in PyCharm.
- Provide a screen recording demonstrating the behavior.
This helps JetBrains Support investigate and address the situation comprehensively.
