Unable to stop processes in PyCharm (Windows OS)

Problem

A user is unable to terminate a running script or close the window in PyCharm using the red "Stop" button. This issue persists across debug and regular execution modes on a Windows operating system.

Cause

This behavior may be caused by PyCharm's default use of a graceful process termination method (emulating CTRL+C) that might not properly function in all environments or configurations.

Resolution

To address this issue, you can modify the PyCharm registry to change the process termination method. Follow these steps:

1. Use double shift to open the global search and type Registry

2. Look for the following key: use.winp.for.graceful.process.termination and untick it.

3. Save the changes and restart PyCharm to ensure the changes take effect.
