Problem
In PyCharm Pro, an SSH, WSL or Docker interpreter cannot be added. The Add New Interpreter menu of the Python interpreter widget shows only Add Local Interpreter…. The entries On SSH…, On WSL…, On Docker… and On Docker Compose… are missing. A configured SSH interpreter can also be gone from the interpreter list.
Cause
The remote entries come from bundled plugins. When one of these plugins is disabled, PyCharm hides the entries and shows no warning (Disabling FFTP/SFTP/WebDAV Connectivity plugin silently stops/disables docker interpreters):
- On SSH… needs Python, SSH Remote Run, FTP/SFTP/WebDAV Connectivity and Terminal
- On Docker… and On Docker Compose… need the same plugins and Docker. When SSH Remote Run is off, the Docker entries are also missing
- On WSL… (Windows) needs Python and WSL Support Framework
A plugin can be disabled by hand, or by Backup and Sync with the plugin list of another IDE.
Resolution
- Open Settings | Plugins (Ctrl+Alt+S on Windows, ⌘, on macOS) and select the Installed tab
- Enable Python, SSH Remote Run, FTP/SFTP/WebDAV Connectivity, Terminal and Remote Execution Agent: Bundled Binary Files
- For On Docker… and On Docker Compose…, also enable Docker
- Restart PyCharm
If an entry is still missing, collect the logs with Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data and search idea.log for a line such as:
Module intellij.python.remoteInterpreter is not enabled because dependency org.jetbrains.plugins.remote-run is not available
The plugin ID after dependency is the plugin to enable.
On WSL… on Windows
WSL Support Framework (org.jetbrains.plugins.wsl.remoteSdk) is not listed on Settings | Plugins. To enable WSL Support Framework again:
- Close PyCharm
- Open
disabled_plugins.txtin the IDE configuration directory - Delete the line
org.jetbrains.plugins.wsl.remoteSdkand save the file - Start PyCharm
